Skincare the sattvic way

Sattvic-Savvy Skincare

Being beautiful is big business; the latest data from KPMG shows the Indian beauty market growing at a rate of 15-20% a year; that’s twice as fast as sales in the US and Europe.  Within that, the most intense competition is among herbal and natural brands. It’s likely that consumers are looking for more wholesome ways to improve their beauty regime because research has shown the benefits of organic makeup and skincare.  Your skin is the canvas upon which you build your beauty look; if it’s glowing and nourished to start with, every product you use will look even better, and you’ll look even more naturally beautiful on sans makeup days too.  Eating good food not only tastes great but will nourish you from within, helping to create radiant, clear skin.

Eat your way to a greater glow

Foods which are rich in antioxidants and vitamin C are a good place to start as they neutralize free radicals which damage the skin.  Enjoy citrus fruits, berries and leafy green vegetables like broccoli and spinach. For youthful, bright skin, protein-rich food which helps your body to replenish skin cells and produce collagen is essential.  Collagen gives our skin strength and elasticity, but our body produces less of it as we grow older. Sattvic foods which pack a protein punch include lentils, chickpeas, almonds, and oats. You can even use oats as a face mask; try them ground and mixed with honey for a soothing, anti-inflammatory treatment.  Of course, there are many other options for facial treatments, so you might prefer to add one of these to your routine for maximum effect.

Protect and defend your skin from external factors

While eating well can help you get glowing from within, you also need to protect your skin from external influences such as pollution, toxins and day to day stresses.  Sunscreen is essential as a barrier to harmful UV rays. Next up: those old favorites sleep and water. Data published by Fitbit last year puts Indians in second place globally for sleep deprivation, yet sleep is a crucial part of any balanced approach to health.  Without sleep, the body makes more of the stress hormone cortisol, which can lead to inflammation and irritation.  Drinking water benefits the body in numerous ways, but in particular, it helps your skin to stay hydrated and flush out toxins.  For extra impact, try to cut down on caffeine and replace with simple water or herbal teas such as chamomile and lavender.

One thing’s for sure; whether you’re eating something delicious or using it as an enriching face mask, the right food can make a huge difference to your skin.  By nourishing your body with essential proteins and vitamins, you are giving your skin the best chance of looking and feeling beautiful. Any good skincare routine should also include protection from external elements and an opportunity for the body to expel toxins and repair itself.  Combine the two and you should have the perfect recipe for happy skin.
